Following the launch of the new Grand Calibre I left the channel on and Ideal World are now using the Nativity and the birth of Jesus Christ to sell jewellery. Can't believe it, I do find this offensive. Is it just me? The presenter is delivering the item in such a reverent way that he sounds like he is giving a sermon. I don't normally like to slate presenters but this is beyond belief.

No it isn't just you. I had to turn it off too. Didn't recognise the presenter - is he part of the IW team?

I'm with you too. When the presenter started on immediately before the GC launch I thought he was messing around. My toes began to curl................. Yuck! Ideal World seems to have gone bananas from the little bit I have watched - the two presenters from Bid TV who have recently appeared take power/pressure selling to a new high. The one used to be very funny years ago on BTV but now it is excruciating.

Thank you ladies, it is not just me being oversensitive then. I Only watch Ideal World for the pick of the day craft product so I am not familiar with all the new presenters. I wondered if he was the person selling the item rather than a regular and yes Deefersmum you are right it was toe curling.

Jesus, if he existed was NOT born in December!! The hierarchy of the church moved all the christian festivals to the pagan ones so that people would celebrate them, the term is actually Yule not christmas.

I think the guy in question used to be a presenter on Bid tv or Price Drop tv, not my cup of tea really, I think Ideal World and Create and Craft employed some presenters when Bid tv and Price Drop tv closed down, his name is Peter Wilson, he speaks to you like he is preaching to you.

I remember seeing some jewelry being sold which came from the purported birth place of Jesus, is this the same stuff? I thought it was appallingly crass and commercial at the time and couldn't believe even IW would sell it. Think Dennice Robinson was presenting. They seemed to keep on showing it for ages so don't think it sold well.

Are you sure it isn't Peter Simon?

A long time ago Peter Simon used to be on with Phillip Schofield (fairly sure).

Didn't see it myself, been busy trying to sort out City Link most of the day. I'm not religious myself, but I do enjoy Christmas Carols, and the spirit of the religious festivities. Not quite sure what that makes me, a nut case perhaps! ;)

Anyhow, there comes a point when religion and commercialism do not mix, it sounds as though this was one of them.

I must be honest I do find some of the items for sale for Remembrance Sunday to be offensive, especially when something that costs the buyer £30+ yet the RBL only receive 10% at most, or more often 50 pence. It is the same when folks wear poppies they have made themselves, then say they don't need to buy one, totally forgetting that the money goes into helping those injured in more recent conflicts. Not just the present ones either, but WWII, the Falklands conflict, Kuwait, and even those injured on the streets of Belfast, Derry, Armagh, etc. By all means wear your poppy with pride, but please fill those boxes with some of your hard earned cash.

Yes I think your right Muffintop, Dennice did dem some cross pendants and they had a tiny chip of stone in the middle purporting to be from Bethlehem. Cant remember if it was last year or before but I can remember it.

Rozminis, I wear a poppy I made myself (felted it) as I got fed up with loosing the paper ones, but I always make sure I still put my money in the collecting tin, as I see it, the charity benefits whilst not having to incur the cost of providing me with a poppy (all be it only at a small cost to them)

My friend crotcheted loads of poppies and sold them in work. It cost her a fortune in wool and pretty black buttons to put in the centre but all the proceeds went to the British Legion poppy appeal. I was very proud of her fund raising efforts. Yes the presenter was Peter Simon ( I did wonder if he was chosen because his name features two of the apostles!).

Good show on making money for the RBL. So many peeps think it is only the wearing of it that matters, which is wrong because they do desperately need the funds.

Many years ago I worked for the RNIB, I was quite surprised at how many items there were for sale for the blind, even little plastic thingies so they could sign cheques. Anyway one of our largest customers was St Dunstan's. I could never understand why they didn't receive the discount that everybody else received. Sheesh, I didn't even realise who St Dunstan was, or what the charity named after him is. It was years before I found out it is for blind war veterans.

There are lots of Muslims and Hindus living in Peterborough - I wonder why C&C don't use the life of Muhammad to sell presents for Eid, or Lord Ram to sell goodies for Divali? Christianity is fair game but treating other religions in the same way is seen as racist or culturally insensitive.

One of the Muslim students at the Uni gave me a box of chocs and a Christmas card. Bless him, he was such a dear. When last I heard he was doing extra training to be a theatre nurse. Would have loved to have woken up from my operations to find him checking my pulse and offering kind words. Danni, where were you when I needed you? :mysmilie_478:

Does anyone know what happened to that charity that was posting on here last year asking for Christmas cards to give to sevicemen to send home? Can't remember their name.

I've found the thread but when I clicked on the link it didn't work. Reading through the thread the charity were going to set up a new web site so it looks as if that's what they've done. Have you tried searching the 'net' for any charities? It would be too late for Christmas cards this year as they need them early November at the latest.

Thanks Pyjama Princess. It is a shame they didn't post details of the new website on here as lots of people from this site helped last year but I didn't have the time to make any cards as my mother was in hospital. I would have loved to help In the future.

I've just found a second thread started by the forum member who is part of this charity. The thread was about used postage stamps and several forum members had sent some (including JACKSMISSIS). Perhaps one of them still has contact details for the charity. I'll read a bit more and possibly start a new thread - you might be able to get a bit more info then.

No sorry peeps, I don't have any details either. I am still supporting charities but find the ones that only appear at Christmas and then don't keep us in the loop (so to speak) a bit off putting. We've had quite a few over the years that have been so deserving then disappear, so my contributions go to local ones now (I hope this doesn't sound nasty, I really don't mean it too).

I keep my local fluffit and woofit shop supplied with cards, its about all I can keep up with. If they didn't exist it would probably be our local Sally Army. Shame there is a local hospice shop as I would try and divide my cards between the two. I know I am keen on voluntary euthanasia, but I also support those who prefer letting nature take its course.

There is a hospice shop in Barnsley, but it is a tad out of my way when it comes to carrying a bag that is heavy with cards, especially as I could only get there on a Monday. I can nip down to the fluffit/woofit shop any day of the week. Was going to take some Chrissy decorations and cards down tomorrow, but I have loads of stuff for the post, so it will have to wait until Tuesday instead.

Just a wee note .... BFPO 792 which was for Afghan has now ceased as they are pulling out of there so boxes will have ceased to be sent , you'd have to ask if another combat op in able to take them ( boxes are free to combat zones ) but are charged at a reduced rate to non combat

Huh, well parcels were not at a reduced to Cyprus when I sent one a few years ago. Not only that, but the dratted thing took over a month to arrive. Keith said it is because they wait until they have a full aircraft before parcels go there. Must be naughty boy country! I wonder how long they take to arrive in Belize, now that really is naughty boy land. ;)
