October Swap - The Cards

So here we are, the October cards and the first one is made by our own organiser, Little Jan. Very clever of you Little Jan to combine both themes. I wouldn't have thought of using pink for Halloween, but it works really well! Thank you so much.

Little Jan's card is right by the computer and I've been thinking about the problems we all have with actually making cards sometimes! Looking at LJ's card, it's obvious that she's put a lot of thought into it, using different techniques specifically for this particular swap. If you break it down, it has several components. What I often do is this; if I'm pleased with a card, I'll prepare similar components but I might change the actual focal point and perhaps use different colours.

Using LJ's card as an example, you could then emboss a few backgrounds using the same folder but in different colours. Then do the same with the leafy flourish. Then a smaller mat like the pink one. Then instead of the owl, you could use a different die cut or stamp an image. The result would be another finished card and you wouldn't spend ages searching through your stash trying to do something totally different. Best of all, the sense of achievement for having used some stuff plus having a few 'back-up' cards for future use. Simples!!

Brilliant card, LJ, love it!

Victoria, I really like your analysis of it. Occasionally I make multiples / slight variants of a card I'm making. It's usually because I'm trying something out and try a few slightly different ways to see which I prefer. Then I usually send the best one for the swap and the not-so-good one(s) to non-cardmaking friends or relatives, because they will hopefully still appreciate it without realising it could have been better! But mostly I make one-offs and it is a lot less efficient / more time-consuming. I do sometimes cut extra when I'm doing die-cutting and find it quite useful sometimes to dip into my box of die-cut shapes.


Mine this month is late but I did PM Julie to let her know. Problems at work have led to a few lost evenings and then we had problems at home too... not relationship-wise, just house / cats.
