Thanks everyone! Had a lovely day; DH took me out for a slap-up dinner (lunch for you southerners) followed by some glasses of vino sitting in the sun in the beer garden.

Post in the village has been dreadful lately but we got a huge pile of it today including several birthday cards for me. So thank you, ladies, for my wonderful birthday cards; I love all of them.

I shared a room with a Yorkshire lass from Huddersfield in my first year at university at Durham. We had formal dinners in college several evenings each week - but she always referred to them as 'tea'! It was a habit I picked up as well.

Having lived so long in London, I had got used to saying lunch and dinner but now ice reverted to northern ways.

And for us in this part of Wales, it’s dinner mid-day and supper in the evening! We had dinner in school, then tea at 4.00 straight after school when my father and grandfather joined us from their work on the farm, then supper quite late - never before 7.30 and later in the summer when they worked out until late. When I went to Uni, I couldn’t get my head around the idea of ‘tea’ being the proper evening meal, and at a time like 6.00 pm for many English friends. Teatime for us after school meant bread and butter and jam and cakes.

Mum was a stickler for times for meals
Breakfast was 7am for my Dad and older brother
Earlier if dad was on a early shift
Mum and I had breakfast at 8 then
I had 30 mins of chores before I left for school and mum went to work
I had a packed lunch till I was 11 and we moved 5 mins from school
So I came home Lunch was 12-1.15 so would help mum prep evening meal
Before she went back to work
Dinner was 6pm sharp if you were late to the table no pudding
Weekends were less strict
But Sunday’s lunch became dinner served at 1pm
Tea was 5pm

I remember once my dad was wallpapering and said to my mum not to cook a roast
He would have egg on chips in the evening
Well you would have though my dad had said he was running off with another women
Sunday’s is for a roast this is not some back end cafe
We all laughed
From then on dad got his egg and chips when he fancied it
And we could go out for the day without mum fussing about doing a roast lol

To me dinner is the meat and two/three veg whatever time it's served, anything else is either lunch or tea lol.

I lived in the South East(North West Kent), my Dad was a Londoner (Lewisham) and my Mum was from Cambridge.
