I can't make up my mind which is the best photograph, so here are three views of the cake I made for my in laws Golden Wedding. Two focus on the overall effect, others on the central spray.

Lovely Lorrraine, did you make those roses

Afraid not, I bought them in Dublin in one of the best cookshops I have ever seen in my life. Fantastic colouring too, never seen old gold anywhere else.

Thank you for your kind comments, just wanted to share with you the result of my endeavours.

Friends and relatives have been telling me for years I should make and decorate cakes professionally, but I am a bit wary of doing this, as commissioned pieces apply pressure on you, the cakes have to be perfect everytime.

I used to make all my families special cakes but found that outsiders didnt want to pay the price. they didn't seem to understand the price of the icing and the time consuming and effort taken into making all the flowers by hand so would rather pay for a massed produced sponge cake from tesco ect.I have made every cake for my daughter since she was born but sadly dexterity problems with my fingers has stopped me making all those little iced roses by hand now

Precisely LittleJan. Seems to be much the same problem as with card making, its assumed that if something is homemade, its a cheaper option. What makes me so sick is that so called professionals make and ice cakes, full of cheap ingredients (fruit with a bloom on it, gritty currants etc) so the cake tastes like sawdust, charge a high price and people are hoodwinked into thinking that the price tag indicates the quality.

When my SiL got married, my in laws paid out for a kosher cake, made by a kosher caterer, as it was a Jewish wedding. The cake was not decorated the way that the bride had specified and tasted horrible and not only that, the cake leant and to this day she and her OH still say the cake was a mistake. To add insult to injury the price was horrendous too.

Lorraine, this is a truly beautiful cake! I made a wedding cake for my brother and sister-in-law and had a lot of fun getting the wedding favors (http://myweddingreceptionideas.com/wedding_favors.asp) to match the cake and theme of the wedding! I know, I may be a little obsessive, but it looks so nice when it all comes together beautifully!
